Why we Joined 1% for the Planet

We're very passionate about the planet here at Broken Top, and living in Bend, Oregon Feeds our love for the outdoors. We're working to spread our passion and see what we can do to reduce our impact on the planet.

This year, we took the leap to join 1% for the Planet and made the commitment to give back 1% of our total annual revenue to the environment. Although we're still growing as a business, we feel it's important to give whatever we can back to the planet.

We also joined 1% for the Planet because we believe businesses should be accountable to an "earth tax" and 1% for the Planet to oversee that process

Fun Fact: All of these pictures were taken in various nature spots around our headquarters, in beautiful Bend, Oregon

“This is not philanthropy. This should be a cost of doing business.

It’s paying rent for our use of the planet”

- Yvon Chouinard (Founder of Patagonia and 1% for the Planet)

What is 1% for the Planet?

1% for the Planet was started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. They too, are lovers of the outdoors and knew they had a responsibility to protect the planet, as we all do, and decided to give their 1% back to the environment. Whether their companies were profitable or not. Since then, with it's 5,000+ members and 4,500+ non profit partners, 1% for the Planet has donated $295 million dollars directly to nonprofits.

Did you know? Only 3% of total philanthropic giving goes to environmental causes. We want to be apart of the growth in environmental giveback, and believe the planet needs us now more than ever.

How it Works

There are six core value areas 1% for the Planet is currently focused on: climate, food, land, pollution, water, and wildlife. These key categories encompass 1% for the Planet's passions and needs.

1% for the Planet supports a wide variety of non-profit partners that are working to address some of the most pressing environmental issues

Each member can choose where their donation goes. Contributions go directly to those organizations so the donations can make the most impact possible.

“Everything we personally own that’s made, sold, shipped, stored, cleaned, and ultimately thrown away does some environmental harm every step of the way, harm that we’re either directly responsible for or is done on our behalf.”

– Yvon Chouinard
