Why We Joined 1% for the Planet

We're very passionate about the planet here at Broken Top, and living in Bend, Oregon feeds our love for the outdoors. We're working to spread our passion and see what we can do to reduce our impact on the planet.

We took the leap to join 1% for the Planet, making the commitment to give back 1% of our total annual revenue to the environmnet. Although we are still a growing business, we feel it's important to give whatever we can back to our planet.

We also joined 1% for the Planet because we believe businesses should be accountable to an "earth tax" and 1% for the Planet oversees that process.

Fun fact: All of these pictures were taken out in nature around our headquarters in beautiful Bend, Oregon.

What is 1% for the Planet?

1% for the Planet was started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Flies). They too, are lovers of the outdoors and knew they had a responsibility to protect the planet, as we all do, and decided to give their 1% back to the environment whether their companies were profitable or not.

Since then, with it's 5,000+ members and 4,500+ nonprofit partners, 1% for the Planet has donated $295 million directly to nonprofits.

Did you know? Only 3% of total philanthropic giving goes to environmental causes. We want to be part of the growth in environmental giveback, and believe the planet needs us now more than ever.

How it Works

There are six core value areas 1% for the Planet is currently focused on: climate, food, land, pollution, water, and wildlife. These key categories encompass 1% for the Planet's passions.

1% for the Planet supports a wide variety of nonprofit partners that are working to address some of the most pressing environmental issues.

Each member can choose where their donation goes. Contributions go directly to those organizations so the donations can make the most impact possible.

What You Can Do

You can choose to buy from brands that also happen to be 1% for the Planet members and be a conscious customer: keeping the planet in mind when making purchases.

Think about the impact of your purchases and what you can do to make the most out of your product! This includes reusing packaging or vessels and/or recycling in the proper channels.

For example, you can reuse your Broken Top glass! Candle jars and linen spray/lotion/soap bottles can be reused for anything from accessories for your sink to bringing new plant life into your home. There are plenty of options for reusing your Broken Top Glass, read about some more ideas here!
